SUMMARY OF THE STORY ABOUT LOVE:
About Love is a story written by a famous Russian story writer Anton Chekhov where the writer presents the three dimensional love stories and shows the love as an unbounded and unrestricted thing which is not bound even by a marital relations. Love is a matter of the heart and mind couldnt understand the language of heart. Three love stories are shown in the story which are the representatives of three categories of love.
The first story is an example of violent love story. Alyohin, the narrator of the story told about the violent love affairs between his two servants Nikanor and Palageya. According to the narrator, Nikanor was a drunkard and interestingly religious minded. In due course of his stay in Alyohins house, he fell in love with Palageya. Palageya didnt want to marry Nikanor but was ready to live with him just so. On the other hand, Nikanor couldnt stay with her due to some religious reasons. Sometimes he used to beat her in his intoxicated state. In Spite of this, they love each other. So, Alyohin defines love as a hindrance and a source of dissatisfaction and irritation.
The second love story is a materialistic love. The lady is concerned with the money only. Every time Alyohin held her in his arms, she used to ask for a month allowance. Third story, which is the main story is the unexpressed love which presents a sequence of events in the life of Alyohin and his attraction towards Anna.
Alyohin had to work hard at Sofyino to pay off his father debt as his father has spent a lot of money on his education by mortgaging the land. Though he was a landowner, Alyohin had to work hard in the field with his servants. Many years ago, he had been elected as honorary magistrate and sometimes he had to go to the town to participate in court session. Unexpectedly, one of his friends, Luganovich invited him to dinner. There, he was very much attracted by the young and beautiful Anna Alexeyevna, the wife of Luganovich. From the very first sight, he started to like her. In the later days, he frequently visited her and they spent much time together talking for hours and going to the theatre. Though they couldn't miss the company of each other, they didnt express their desires, love and feelings. They hid their feelings fearing that it will ruin both of their lives.
Finally, as a result of unexpressed feelings, Anna got mental sickness and she had to go to Crimea for treatment. Many people gathered at the railway station to say goodbye to Anna. when the train started to move, Alyohin ran to Anna with her basket which she had forgotten. Their emotional eyes met together and their spiritual strength couldnt stop them falling in each other's arms. They kissed each other and expressed their deep love. However, their reunion did not results into their marriage. Alyohin got down at the next station and there after they never meet each other.

Luganovich is one of the important characters in Chekhovs story ??About Love?. Luganovich is Annas husband and good friend of Alyohin. He is over forty and is assistant president of circuit court. Though he is over forty in age he has married a beautiful and young lady of only twenty two years old. So, his wife is unsatisfied with him. As a result of which, she kept a love affair with Alyohin.
Luganovich was so innocent that he never suspected over Alyohin though he used to come regularly to meet Anna. He was unknown about the love affair even at the end.
He is helpful and hospitable in the sense that he is glad of guests and he requests Alyohin to take help from him to pay off the debt. According to Alyohin, he is a charming, good-natured, simple-minded person. He believes that once a man is indicted in court, he is guilty and one should not express doubt as to the correctness of the verdict. He is in harmonious relationship with Anna. Throughout the course of events, he seems to be a static character.
However, Luganovich is careless of his wife needs. He seems to be very reluctant about his wifes biological and spiritual love. So, she falls in unexpressed love with Alyohin. So, Luganovich is failure person in his family life.

Later she becomes the victim of nervous prostration because of psychological depression and nervousness.
4. Sketch character of Alyohin. Do you consider him a successful or a failure? [NEB][10]
About Love is a story written by a famous Russian story writer Anton Chekhov where the writer presents the three dimensional love stories and shows the love as an unbounded and unrestricted thing which is not bound even by a marital relations. He sketch the character of Alyohin in the story.
Alyohin is the central character and narrator of Chekhov's story About Love. He graduated from a university. He is an educated man with knowledge of languages. He considers himself as a bookish fellow but rashes around like ??a squirrel in a cage? , works hard and yet always be penniless.
He has been working as a poor farmer like a village cat driven by hunger to eat cucumbers in the kitchen garden since he graduated from the university. He works hard in the farm as his father has spent a lot of money on his education by mortgaging the land. Thus, he is hard working.
He is a scholar,an actor and painter. He is a sensitive and considerate (kind) person. He was once elected as an honorary justice of peace in his own town.
Alyohin is a middle class ordinary man who is conscious about the middle class social mortality. He kept his love secret in his heart because he was afraid of social scandal. He became ready to be separated forever rather than to be socially criticized. At last, he sacrifices his love and desires to protect the social morality.
Alyohins vision of love is shaped by his own love affair. He thinks that love is a great mystery. He thinks love to be a hindrance and source of dissatisfaction and irritation.
Alyohin is like a squirrel in a cage. Like a squirrel in a cage, Alyohin is confined in his farmhouse. He has to live like a peasant despite being a university graduate, however with repugnance. He is trapped by reason, middle class morality and poverty. He is a man of thought. He fears to express his love to Anna because he is too much thoughtful about societys moral standards. He sacrifices his love thinking that his marriage to Anna would ruin the lives of her, her children, her mother and her husband. He fears that he couldnt make her happy in his country house. He is an ideal character in a sense that he is trustworthy and reliable man who never betrays friends.
Anton chekhov also sketches the character of Alyohin as representative of ordinary people to show how unhappy and complicated life they live. He is afraid of self-respect and morality. He doesnt borrow money from Luganovich which shows that Alyohin doesnt want to lose his self respect.
I think Alyohin is a successful person because he thinks deeply about the result of the love that he does to Alexeyevna in future. Though he loves her deeply, he questions himself ??would it be honourable? ? It means he is worried about the life of her husband, her children and the whole household in which he was so loved and trusted. Though he loses his deep love in terms of physical, expressive and passionate, he does not lose his trust, honor and spiritual love. Though he departs with her unhappily, he does not betray his own friend and the two children of them. He pays them their debit with his honesty and chastity. He believes in spiritual love rather than physical. He doesn't ruin the family of his friend Luganovich even though he is left crying.
Thus, Alyohin is a successful person in terms of his lost not in gain. Only very few people could do what he had done. He is an ideal character in a sense that he is trustworthy and reliable man who never betrays friends. So, he is a successful person for his devotion, honesty, self-respect, and fidelity toward friend and his family.
